Certified Scrum Master (CSM) Test Eligibility Requirements

Certified Scrum Master (CSM) is an entry-level Scrum certification administered through the Scrum Alliance. CSM is one of the most popular and recognized Scrum Certifications you can attain. A CSM certification recognizes your ability to gain an in-depth knowledge of Scrum and learn practical ways to apply it to your team and your organization.

To qualify for CSM:

  1. Attend an in-person 16-hour Certified Scrum Master course (CSM®) taught by a Certified Scrum Trainer® (CST®). The cost of training ranges from $700 - $1200 US dollars. The majority of training is conducted online.

  2. Pass the online CSM® exam by answering at least 37 out of 50 questions correctly (74%) within the 1-hour time limit. The test is given online and not proctored or held physically.

  3. After passing the CSM test, you must accept the CSM License Agreement and complete your Scrum Alliance membership profile.

Here is more information from the Scrum Alliance website:

“The CSM test contains 50 multiple-choice questions based on the CSM learning objectives, and candidates will have one hour to complete it. The passing score is 74%. You will not be able to pause the test, but questions can be bookmarked to answer later during the 60-minute time limit. For more information about which types of topics and questions are included on the CSM test, please refer to our CSM Test Specifications Outline. It also serves as a study guide!

After receiving the initial welcome email from Scrum Alliance that contains the account activation link, you will have 90 days to complete the CSM test for free. Students are also given two free attempts to pass the CSM test. If you fail the test twice or complete it after 90 days, you will be prompted to pay a $25 USD test attempt fee.

The CSM test is available in English, Spanish (Castilian), Portuguese, French, Italian, Latin American Spanish, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Danish, Czech, Polish, and Russian.”
